Tarifa: kitesurfing paradise with a Moroccan old town and views of Africa

If we had to describe Tarifa in one sentence, it would be this: a place where Europe meets Africa, where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean Sea, and where a historic old town blends with the free-spirited rhythm of kitesurfers. Not only is Tarifa the southernmost point of mainland Europe, but it’s also one of the most unique towns in Spain, surprising even the most experienced travelers.

Tarifa: a kitesurfing paradise with a Moroccan old town and views of Africa. After visiting, we can say right away – Tarifa is not just another Andalusian town. It has its own character and unmistakable vibe.

What makes Tarifa so special?

  • To begin with, the geography sets Tarifa apart. Tarifa is just a few kilometers from Africa, so on a clear day you can see the coast of Morocco with the naked eye. As a result, this creates a truly impressive feeling – you stand in Europe, but you’re looking directly at another continent.
  • Moreover, the wind is a defining feature. Tarifa is known as one of the windiest places in Europe, making it a true kitesurfing capital. Even if you’re not a sports enthusiast, simply watching the colorful kites in the sky is an experience in itself.
  • Furthermore, the atmosphere is unique. Here, you’ll find a blend of southern Spanish lifestyle, Moroccan cultural influences, and a bohemian, free-spirited community of travelers.

Interestingly, Tarifa is named after Tarif ibn Malik – one of the first Muslim warriors to arrive on the Iberian Peninsula in the 8th century. This marked the beginning of the Muslim expansion into Spain.

Tarifa’s old town – a little Morocco in Europe

The biggest surprise for many is the old town. In fact, it closely resembles a Moroccan medina: narrow, winding streets, white houses with colorful doors, tiny shops and cozy cafés, and a vibrant, slightly chaotic architecture.

As you explore, you’ll want to wander without a plan. For example, one street leads to a small square, while another brings you to a hidden restaurant or courtyard.

Since we’ve visited Morocco with children, we can all agree that this truly feels like a mini medina in Europe.

Beaches and kitesurfing

Tarifa is famous for its beaches – they are wide, wild, and windy, but above all, colorful and full of action.

The most popular beaches:

  • Los Lances – a long, easily accessible beach by the town
  • Valdevaqueros – the main kitesurfing spot with impressive dunes
  • Punta Paloma – a quieter spot if you want less wind

Even if you don’t plan to try kitesurfing, it’s worth coming to watch the kitesurfers, walking along the ocean, and catching the sunset. Take a seat in a chiringuito – a beach bar or café – for the full experience.

From Tarifa to Africa in just one hour

Regular ferries run from Tarifa to Tangier (Morocco), with the crossing taking about an hour.

You can also book a full-day tour to Africa. The package includes round-trip ferry tickets Tarifa–Tangier / Tangier–Tarifa, bus transportation, a guided tour of Cape Spartel and the Hercules Caves, a visit to the Medina and Kasbah, lunch in a traditional restaurant, and tickets to a synagogue and the Hercules Cave.

Whale watching

The Strait of Gibraltar is one of the few places in Europe where dolphins live year-round, pilot whales are often seen, and orcas sometimes appear.

Join a whale watching cruise from Tarifa, sail through the Strait of Gibraltar, and marvel at the diversity of marine life in this biosphere reserve. Enjoy breathtaking coastal views – this is one of our top recommendations for things to do in Tarifa.

Where to eat – our recommendations

Our travel route: MalagaCaminito del ReyRondaGibraltar – Tarifa – Malaga. We spent a few days in Tarifa, but honestly, we could have stayed longer – the relaxing atmosphere, charming old town, and beautiful beaches make it the perfect destination for a week-long holiday.

Ultimately, if you want to see a place where Europe almost touches Africa, feel the laid-back, free, and bohemian vibe, get lost in an old town that feels like Morocco, and experience a different side of Spain, then head to Tarifa.
