Until the 18th century, Garachico was one of the most important trading ports in Tenerife. It had active trade with Europe and the New World. However, in 1706, the eruption of the Trevejo volcano completely changed the fate of the town. Lava covered the port and part of the settlements. As a result, it destroyed infrastructure and forced the town to begin a new stage of its history.
Although the eruption was a major blow to the local economy, Garachico gradually recovered. Today, the lava that once brought destruction has become one of the most impressive natural features of the town.
Natural pools on the Atlantic coast
One of the most well-known symbols of Garachico is the El Caletón natural lava pools. They formed after the 1706 eruption, when solidified lava created natural bays and pools. Today, this is one of the most popular swimming spots in the northern part of Tenerife.
In addition, the pools are especially attractive because of their unique surroundings. Black lava rocks, clear Atlantic water, and views of the dramatic coastline create a striking landscape.
Historical heritage and architecture
Garachico also stands out for its historical architecture. In the town, you can see buildings from the 17th–18th centuries, as well as old churches and fortresses. One of the most interesting sites is Castillo de San Miguel, a small fortress built in the 17th century.
The main church of Garachico was built in the 16th century. It survived the volcanic eruption and today remains one of the most important historical buildings in the town.
Parque de la Puerta de Tierra is the place where the entrance to the old port once stood. After the volcanic eruption, this area became a historical park where you can see fragments of the old city wall.
A calm and authentic corner of Tenerife
Unlike the resorts in the southern part of the island, Garachico has kept a calmer and more authentic character. Here, you will meet more local residents than crowds of tourists. Therefore, the town allows you to slowly enjoy the history, nature, and culture of Tenerife.
A walk through the old town helps you feel the true Canarian spirit. You will find small squares, cozy cafés, and local shops. One place worth visiting is the Canarian perfume shop Casa del Perfume Canario.
