Over fifty years of history
Forester A. Valavičius founded Girios Aidas Museum in 1971. His goal was to create a space to showcase the finest achievements in forestry and nature conservation. A fire later destroyed the original building, but within a year, the museum was rebuilt – three and a half times larger than before.
For over fifty years, the museum has become one of Lithuania’s most attractive places to learn about forest plants, animals, and forestry traditions.
The exhibits let you see the forest not just as a place for walks, but as a complex living world. Every plant and animal plays an essential role. Many exhibits are related to the Dzūkija region, so it’s also interesting for those who want to learn more about local nature.
The museum’s environment is especially engaging for children. Kids can see taxidermied forest animals and birds up close. Some of these creatures are hard to spot in the wild, and if you do, it’s usually best to observe them from a distance.
Not just to look – listen as well
One of Girios Aidas’ special features is the chance to listen to nature sounds and bird calls while walking through the museum. Interactive elements help visitors experience the forest not only through sight but also sound. This helps you feel like you’re in a real forest and learn to recognize nature sounds you might usually ignore.

Girios Aidas tells more than just about animals

The museum also pays attention to folk art. Here, you’ll find exhibitions of wood carving, blacksmithing, ceramics, amber work, and other crafts. In addition, the museum library houses books about forests, forestry, and nature. In summer, camps and special activities for young forest enthusiasts take place here, giving kids the chance to learn even more about nature.
Nature Trail – an extension of the museum
Interesting discoveries await outside too. Around Girios Aidas, you’ll find a decorative plant nature trail. This path lets you see rare Lithuanian trees and decorative plant species.
You’ll also spot impressive wooden sculptures, crosses, benches, and other carvings created by well-known folk artists – A. Česnulis, S. Vaida, A. Lastauskas, A. Raugala, J. Videika, and others.
Kids especially love searching for witch or dwarf figurines hidden in the oak tree hollows.
Girios Aidas Museum truly amazed us – it helps you connect with Lithuania’s forest life and encourages you to see nature through new eyes. After a visit, even a simple walk in the woods becomes more interesting. Kids start to recognize bird calls, notice plants, and see things in nature that they hadn’t before.
