Smurf Village in Spain

Have you heard about the blue village in Spain, where the houses, school, and church are all painted blue? Yes, it’s true! That’s the Smurf Village in Spain – Juzcar. One of the founders of “Travel 4 kids,” Agnė, recently visited this village with her family and the kids’ grandparents.

Agnė recommends visiting, even if you’re not a big fan of the Smurf cartoons or movies. The village is both fun and unique. Curious about how and why the Smurf Village in Spain came to be, and what its history is? Read on in this article.

How a quiet Andalusian village turned blue

Until 2011, Juzcar was a white village, just like most towns in Andalusia. Did you know that in Andalusia, it’s a tradition to paint town buildings white? This not only helps reduce heat but also protects against pests thanks to the properties of white lime. However, everything changed in 2011, and Juzcar became the blue Smurf Village in Spain.

In 2011, during the launch of the “Smurfs 3D” movie, a communications agency came up with a unique idea. They suggested turning an entire village blue – just like in the Smurfs movie. The whole village, including 250 houses, the church, the school, and other buildings, was painted blue. The filmmakers even held the movie’s premiere in this blue village.

After the premiere, Juzcar’s residents noticed that the blue village looked original. Moreover, tourists were especially drawn to blue Juzcar.

Juzcar, the Smurf Village in Spain, was soon added to tourist routes. Many people started to visit. Some were looking for unique places in Spain, while others were die-hard fans of the Smurf cartoons.

Our visit to the Smurf Village

While planning our trip to Andalusia, we added the Smurf Village to our must-see list. We definitely didn’t regret it. Both the kids and the adults loved it. I myself remember the Smurfs from childhood, and now our son Motiejus enjoys watching the cartoons too.

In the village, you can stroll around and take pictures with the Smurfs. There are cafes and souvenir shops. You’ll also find a zip line and various events throughout the year.

Juzcar is located near one of Spain’s most beautiful towns, Ronda.
