However, visiting Kaišiadorys with kids can surprise you with very different activities and experiences. Here you can meet animals, ride in a horse-drawn carriage, spend a whole day at one of the largest open-air museums, walk a magical forest trail, admire the panorama of the Kaunas Lagoon, or even cross the Neris River on a unique motorless ferry.

For us, with Greta and Oskaras, it’s not just another destination in Lithuania – this is the region where I grew up and finished school. Every year, the kids return here for holidays at the village with their grandmother and great-grandmother, whom we call Baba. Kaišiadorys is in a very convenient location between Vilnius and Kaunas. The district is surrounded by forests, lakes, and the Kaunas Lagoon, so there are many places where families can combine leisure activities with time in nature.
The city of Kaišiadorys itself is not large, but it has an interesting history. The city began to grow more rapidly in the 19th century after the railway was built between Vilnius and Kaunas. The railway was vital to the city’s life and growth for a long time, and Kaišiadorys remains an important transportation hub.
When traveling with kids, you can start your journey in Kaišiadorys and head towards Žasliai, Žiežmariai, Rumšiškės, or other family-friendly spots.
Experiences and activities in Kaišiadorys District
In Kaišiadorys District, you’ll find places that are interesting not just for what you see, but also for what you can try yourself. For example, you can take a sightseeing trip around Žasliai in a horse-drawn carriage, or cross the Neris with your car on the unique Čiobiškis ferry, which has neither a motor nor oars. In addition, families and friends can join educational sessions at the Žasliai Crafts Center. As a result, these experiences often leave a much deeper impression on children than simply visiting a landmark.
Žasliai horses – discovering the town in a different way
One of the most beautiful and interesting towns in Kaišiadorys district is Žasliai, and you can explore it with kids in a truly unique way.
Žasliai horses offers more than just a visit to a horse farm – it’s a whole experience. One of the highlights is a ride around Žasliai in a horse-drawn carriage. Along the way, you’ll hear stories about the town’s history, people, and interesting places, so for children, the adventure naturally blends with learning about Žasliai itself.
After the ride, you’ll meet the horses and ponies. Kids can pet them, feed them, and learn more about their care. There’s also a small Pony Museum and an exhibition of old household items.

Žasliai Crafts Center
Žasliai Crafts Center is a place where you can not only learn about old crafts but also try them yourself. Various educational activities take place here, and culinary heritage workshops are especially popular – baking šakotis, Žasliai-style kugelis, Kaišiadorys-style kakorai, kūčiukai, buns, and other traditional dishes made in a wood-fired oven. Children’s groups often choose to make caramel candies, candles, felted wool crafts, soap, or participate in “Shepherding Traditions” or “Interesting Beekeeping” workshops. Both families and school groups will find activities here, and some can be booked using the Cultural Pass.
Burundikas adventures – a handcrafted family fun world

What sets Burundikas adventures apart is that most of the attractions are made by the owners themselves. Kids can enjoy original swings, a net park, a multi-tower playground with bridges and obstacles, a zip line, a trampoline, and other active games.
It’s a space where children can move, climb, and try various challenges. You can also book a special program with games and a treasure hunt.

Čiobiškis ferry – the only one of its kind in Lithuania
The Čiobiškis ferry, also known as the Padaliai–Čiobiškis ferry, is one of the most unusual attractions not only in Kaišiadorys district but in all of Lithuania. It is the only ferry of its kind in Lithuania – crossing the Neris without a motor or oars.
This is the only current-powered cable ferry in Lithuania, with no engine or oars. The river’s current alone moves it to the opposite bank.
Even more fun, you can cross with your car. On one bank is Padaliai (Kaišiadorys district), on the other – Čiobiškis (Širvintos district).
For kids, the main question is usually: how can a ferry move without a motor? So a short crossing of the Neris becomes a great hands-on lesson.

Where to see animals with kids in Kaišiadorys District
Kaišiadorys district offers many places for families to meet animals up close and experience real country life. Here you’ll find alpacas, fallow deer, horses, ponies, goats, rabbits, and other farm animals, which children can often pet, feed, or join in simple activities or educational sessions. These places are perfect for a calmer family outing, when you want more nature, animals, and real experiences.
Miško Laja – fun and animals in one place
Miško Laja is a large outdoor space designed mainly for children’s birthday parties, graduation celebrations, and family events.
There’s a playground, balance trails, various games, and a zip line outside. In addition, you’ll meet alpacas, ponies, Cameroon goats, geese, ostriches, and fallow deer.
A big advantage is the indoor area, making it suitable even in bad weather. When there are no private events, Miško Laja is open to individual visitors on certain days.
Miško Laja is truly a paradise for children’s parties in nature.
Laukynės Homestead – animals and relaxation in nature
Laukynės Homestead is a place for families wanting to escape the city and spend more time in nature. You’ll find alpacas, rabbits, and fallow deer, which kids are always excited to see up close. There’s a children’s playground, rest spots, gazebos, and a campfire area on the property.
You can plan a longer family visit, picnic, or celebration here. The homestead also has a pond, sauna, and hot tub. Visits should be arranged in advance.
Pamiškės Pasaka – alpacas, bees, and nature walks
Pamiškės Pasaka is another family-run spot in Kaišiadorys district that puts emphasis on animals and nature.
Here you can meet alpacas, feed, pet, and walk them. The farm’s history is also connected with beekeeping, so visitors can learn about bees and taste honey.
One of the most interesting activities is a forest hike with alpacas. Kids can lead the animal themselves, turning a simple walk in the forest into a much more exciting experience.
This spot is perfect for families who value calm fun and real contact with animals. You can also organize celebrations and children’s educational programs here.
Fallow deer park
Fallow Deer Park is a place where you’ll want to take your time. The main attraction is, of course, the fallow deer. You can get very close to them, and for children, being near animals always leaves a big impression. There are also rabbits in the park.
There are rest and picnic areas in the park, so bring snacks and plan a longer, more relaxed stay in nature.
A fun option for families is to take the train to this park, as the Karčiupis railway stop is nearby. The journey itself becomes an extra adventure for the kids.
Myliu kaimą – real village life for kids
“Myliu kaimą” is another place where children can meet special farm animals, and adults can take a break from city bustle.
Kids can meet animals on the farm, pet rabbits, interact with goats, ponies, and horses. Riding is also available.
There are various outdoor activities, swings, a barefoot trail, and a small climbing park. Parents can relax in special rest areas, so you can take your time and enjoy a longer visit.
“Myliu kaimą” also organizes educational activities and family celebrations. For those wanting a different experience, overnight stays in a treehouse are offered.

The Lithuanian Ethnographic Museum – a place for the whole day
The Lithuanian Open-Air Ethnographic Museum in Rumšiškės is one of the best-known places in Kaišiadorys district and really deserves plenty of time.
In this huge area, you can see farmsteads from different Lithuanian ethnographic regions, old houses, farm buildings, craftsmen’s workshops, and other authentic structures.
With kids, the museum is interesting not only as an exhibition. There are various educational activities, games, and seasonal events, and you can also see animals. In the warm season, the museum’s large grounds are perfect for a long walk.
If you’re visiting with kids, plan to spend at least half a day, not just an hour or two.

Nature discoveries in Kaišiadorys District
Mergakalnis – one of the most impressive panoramas in Kaišiadorys District
While exploring around Rumšiškės, it’s worth visiting Mergakalnis.
This is one of the most beautiful places near the Kaunas Reservoir. From the high bluff, you get a wide view of the reservoir and surrounding forests, making Mergakalnis perfect for a short stop and a walk in nature.
It’s especially beautiful in autumn when the forests turn many colors, but the view is stunning at any time of year.
With kids, it’s easy to combine a visit to Mergakalnis with the nearby new family attraction – the Barstukai Trails.
Barstukai Trails – a fairy tale forest adventure for kids
Barstukai Trails – fun idea for a walk in the woods with children.
The journey is based on Baltic mythology characters – the barstukai. Walking the trail, kids look for their tiny houses hidden in the forest and gradually get to know different characters.
At each stop, you’ll find extra tasks and stories, so for kids, the walk becomes a real quest, not just a stroll through the woods.
Antakalnis multi-trunk linden
The multi-trunk linden in Antakalnis village is a state-protected natural monument and one of the most interesting nature sites in Kaišiadorys district. Over 90 years ago, the main trunk was cut down, but ten new trunks grew from it. Some have since broken in storms, so it’s fun to count how many trunks the linden still has.

Snack Zone in Kaišiadorys
Snack Zone is a small eatery in the center of Kaišiadorys, perfect for a quick stop during your trip around town or the region. Here you can grab a quick bite, and the menu is very simple – chebureks. They are fresh, tasty, and inexpensive.

Lapė tea room in Žasliai
Lapė tea room is a cozy spot in the center of Žasliai, ideal for lunch, coffee, or a dessert stop during your trip in Kaišiadorys district. It’s a good place to eat after visiting the Žasliai Crafts Center or a tour with the Žasliai Ponies.
The food is homemade and very tasty, with a wide variety. We visited at lunchtime and had a delicious meal.

Kaišiadorys District with kids – one day is not enough
You’ll find very different experiences in Kaišiadorys District. You can dedicate one day to animals, another to Rumšiškės and nature, and another to exploring Žasliai or trying the unique ferry across the Neris. If you want nature, you can combine Mergakalnis and the Barstukai Trails.
To us, Kaišiadorys district with kids seems like a great choice not only for a short stop between Vilnius and Kaunas. You can easily plan a whole family weekend here and always discover a new side of this region.
