Ethnocosmology Museum in Molėtai: unique space experience like NASA

Did you know there’s a one-of-a-kind museum in Lithuania that fascinates everyone who visits? Believe it or not, its exhibits are so unique that it’s hard to believe you’re still in Lithuania. Here, you can feel as if you’re in a real NASA center or even in outer space. Recently, we visited the Lithuanian Ethnocosmology Museum in Molėtai with our kids, and the museum, which constantly updates its exhibitions, truly surprised us. This is not just a museum about space – it’s an impressive experience for the whole family, captivating both children and adults from the very first moments. Underground exhibits, futuristic architecture, telescopes, visual effects, and stories about the Universe create the feeling that you’ve stepped into another world.

If you’re looking for an extraordinary weekend destination with kids, the Ethnocosmology Museum in Molėtai will amaze both children and adults. It’s no surprise that we can confidently call the Ethnocosmology Museum in Molėtai one of the most impressive museums in Lithuania.

The Ethnocosmology Museum in Molėtai is a place that’s perfect for children and adults of any age. Even if your kids say they don’t like museums, believe us – after visiting here, they’ll change their minds. The museum is highly interactive, visually engaging, and full of captivating installations. Our kids always visit with excitement and never want to leave.

If you’re unsure whether it’s suitable for younger children, don’t worry. The museum is extremely interactive with lights, effects, moving exhibits, and amazing visuals. Even if the youngest visitors don’t fully understand everything, they are sure to stay engaged.

There are several ways to explore the museum. For example, you can visit the outdoor exhibition, go up to the observation deck, join a daytime tour (the most popular and suitable for children), or, for older kids, experience the night tours.

Ethnocosmology – connecting humanity and the cosmos (the tour)

This is the most popular way to visit. During the tour, you’ll pass through an underground gallery and ascend through seven exhibition spaces that showcase different connections between humanity and the cosmos.

Not only will you see unique exhibits – such as replicas of Lithuania’s first satellites LituanicaSat-1 and LitSat-1, rare meteorites, and traditional Lithuanian household items – but you’ll also hear about astronomical research, space news, and Lithuanian achievements in space exploration.

All rooms are interactive and filled with impressive visual and lighting effects. Exhibits emerge from the walls and appear in unexpected spaces. Guides lead the tours and know how to engage children.

During the tour, you’ll also go up to a 32-meter-high observation deck, where you’ll enjoy stunning panoramic views.

Night tours

Based on our experience, we recommend night tours for older children or adults. During these tours, you can observe celestial objects through 40 or 80 cm telescopes. However, keep in mind that night tours start about 1.5 hours after sunset, and clear skies are essential for seeing the stars. On the day of your tour, you’ll get confirmation by email or SMS after the latest weather forecast, so planning can be tricky. Our night tour was rescheduled three times. Inside the telescope tower, the temperature matches the outside, so if it’s chilly, especially in autumn, dress warmly.

Observation deck

The museum also offers access to the observation deck, 32 meters high. On sunny or clear days, you can see lakes and villages up to 20 kilometers away. Keep in mind observation deck visits are possible only on weekdays and when available, so check with the museum in advance.

Outdoor exhibition

The outdoor exhibition is always open, even when the museum is closed. Its main attraction is the “Sun of Lithuania” stone circle – the only megalithic calendar structure of its kind in Lithuania, with a diameter of 30 meters. Sunlight marks the cardinal points, equinoxes, and solstices. Nearby, you’ll find a two-meter forged sundial and models of the planets. Stones for the circle were brought from every county in Lithuania. The outdoor exhibition is especially impressive when seen from the observation tower.

Practical information and visiting tips

Both day and night tours are available only with a guide, so we highly recommend booking in advance – group sizes are limited, and spots fill up quickly, especially in summer and during school holidays. Tours last a little over an hour.

You can visit the outdoor exhibition any time, before or after your tour, and no booking is needed. Make sure to set aside time for it – it’s fascinating for both kids and adults.

By the way, the museum is free to visit every last Sunday of the month. However, you must pre-register for free Sunday tours – they fill up quickly, and your registration is valid only when you receive confirmation by email or SMS.

We recommend arriving a bit early to visit the museum café, which has plenty of fun interactive activities for kids. Note that the tour goes through different exhibition halls, so it’s not accessible with a stroller. You can reach the observation tower by elevator or stairs.
