What to do in the Ignalina district during winter: from adrenaline to cozy relaxation

February has arrived. The days are gradually getting longer, and sunlight appears more often. However, winter still dominates with its full strength. Snow and cold are not only a challenge, but also perfect conditions for activities that cannot be experienced during other seasons. The Ignalina district offers plenty of such experiences.

In this article, we present several ideas for what to do in the Ignalina district during winter, ranging from adrenaline-filled adventures to peaceful relaxation in a manor.

From adrenaline to cozy relaxation

A suggestion for adrenaline seekers

On weekends, those searching for excitement can visit Winter Drift Track Ignalina. The ice track, located in Grikiapeliai village, allows visitors to safely test extreme driving on ice while improving skills that may later prove useful on the road. Therefore, it is important to arrange your visit in advance.

If you are looking for even more thrilling experiences, “Martino keturračiai” (Martinas quad bikes) offers a quad safari route: Ladakalnis–Ginučiai–Salos. This 3 to 4-hour journey combines the joy of driving with impressive sightseeing locations. Along the route, visitors explore Ladakalnis, which offers a panoramic view of six lakes, the Šiliniškiai observation tower, Ginučiai village with its operating water mill, and Salos ethnographic village.

Horse rides and creative experiences

One of this winter season’s newest activities is trekking with a therapeutic horse at the Ufano ecological farm “Sūrio kelias,” located in Nalivaikai village. The route follows untouched paths toward Mergežeris Lake, passing Žynių and Kauko hills as well as historic stone-paved roads. As a result, visitors can discover the surroundings of the Ignalina district and Švenčionys district from a different perspective.

This experience offers an opportunity to enjoy slow and meaningful travel in nature. In addition, “Sūrio kelias” (cheese road) also provides educational yarn-spinning sessions.

An authentic winter festival in Palūšė

On February 21, Palūšė will host the largest winter festival in the Ignalina district, “Trauk stintelę”. This event offers a rare opportunity to witness a traditional method of smelt fishing from beneath the ice. Fishermen lower and pull nets using a historical technique that involves special wooden tools.

During the festival, visitors can taste smelt grilled over an open fire. Moreover, the program includes folklore and live music performances, educational activities, sports competitions, and an outdoor reed sculpture exhibition. For those seeking unusual winter experiences, the event even offers a hot sauna and ice-water swimming.

Traditionally, “EkoŽygiai” organizes a winter hike along the trails of Aukštaitija National Park. Consequently, “Trauk stintelę” attracts thousands of visitors each year while showcasing local traditions and natural beauty.

Skiing at the Lithuanian Winter Sports Centre

Ignalina is often called the winter sports capital of Lithuania. The Lithuanian Winter Sports Centre features 7.5 kilometers of cross-country skiing tracks, a dedicated children’s skiing track, and the main downhill slope with ski lifts. The slope reaches up to 400 meters in length.

Water activities and saunas at Ignalina SPA

After spending time outdoors, visitors can warm up at the Ignalina Sports and Entertainment Centre. The complex includes a swimming pool, a sauna area, whirlpool baths, and a gym. In addition, accommodation services are available in the same building.

Peaceful relaxation at Paliesius Manor

For those seeking a slower pace, Paliesius Manor offers a peaceful winter retreat. The snow-covered park features 3, 5, and 7-kilometer trails suitable for walking, Nordic walking, or cross-country skiing. After enjoying time outdoors, visitors can relax in the SPA area with a bubble pool and a steam sauna.

In the evening, guests can unwind in cozy manor rooms. Moreover, they can enjoy tasting dinners, explore an exceptional French wine collection in the cellar, or spend time in the inviting “Ponų baras” (Gentlemen’s bar).

Flavours and cozy meeting places

Winter days in Ignalina can also be enriched by visits to local cafés and restaurants.

Visitors will find a bakery offering homemade pastries as well as a restaurant serving traditional Lithuanian cuisine. The restaurant also runs an educational šakotis baking program.

Café “Šeimos virtuvė” (Family kitchen) offers a convenient place to eat and warm up after skiing at the Lithuanian Winter Sports Centre.
