Lithuania’s natural wonder from the Forelle boat deck: unforgettable trip to the Dead Dunes

Lithuania’s natural wonder from the Forelle boat deck: unforgettable trip to the Dead Dunes. That’s exactly the kind of trip the impressive Forelle boat offers, with cruises to the Dead Dunes departing daily from Juodkrantė or the ports of Klaipėda starting July 1.

A few days ago, our family went on such an excursion because seeing the Dead Dunes had been my long-time dream. Even though we travel a lot around Lithuania, we had never sailed the Curonian Lagoon before.

This excursion is a wonderful activity for the whole family. In the morning, you depart from Klaipėda and sail through the Klaipėda Port area, seeing ships, terminals, and daily port life. Then, you arrive in Juodkrantė and have free time for a walk or lunch. After that, the boat continues to the Dead Dunes. Later, you return to Juodkrantė and in the evening head back to Klaipėda. It’s a perfect day trip for families on a very comfortable boat.

The Dead Dunes – one of the most impressive places in Lithuania

The Dead Dunes, located in the Nagliai Nature Reserve, are among the most spectacular sights in Lithuania. The largest ridge opens up breathtaking views of the Baltic Sea and the Curonian Lagoon. You can explore the Dead Dunes by walking the 1.1 km educational trail. The Dead Dunes are often called the Grey Dunes – named for the gray color given by the local vegetation. These dunes also received their name because, in the past, strong sea winds pushed them inland, burying several fishing villages. The dunes “died” in the nineteenth century after a protective ridge was built along the coast. While the educational trail offers beautiful views, the full beauty of the dunes truly reveals itself from the Curonian Lagoon, on the boat deck.

The Forelle boat – impressive history and a unique event venue

The Forelle boat was built in Germany in 1934. This ship has its own story and authentic coziness, which you’ll feel while sailing. The boat has two cozy covered decks that comfortably seat all passengers, and the lower deck has a bar and new sound equipment, making it perfect for celebrations and parties. The boat accommodates up to 80 people across both heated decks, making it a cozy, comfortable, and safe place year-round.

The boat is very stable and does not rock during the trip, which is especially important when traveling with children. You can choose covered decks if you want to feel safer with kids out of the open air. There’s also a toilet and spaces to hide from the wind.

The Forelle boat can be rented for private events, celebrations, conferences, and parties. It’s perfect for group cruises, with enough space for snacks or full meals. Whether relaxing in the lounge or on the open deck, you can enjoy the beautiful views of the Curonian Spit at your own pace.

Impressive tours on the Forelle boat

Currently, Forelle offers routes around the Klaipėda Port area, as well as trips to Juodkrantė, Nida, Uostadvaris, and Mingė Village (“the Lithuanian Venice”). Whether you’re relaxing in the lounge or on the open deck with a coffee, you can enjoy the views of the Curonian Spit National Park. There is also a bar on board.
