We have to admit – when we headed to Tauragė, we expected to find a nice town with interesting educational experiences and fun activities for families. However, one place surprised us much more than we had imagined. Tauragė Region museum Santaka wasn’t just another stop on our route – it became a spot where we spent much more time than planned. Interactive exhibits, archaeological discoveries, and an unexpectedly engaging nature section turned our visit into a real adventure. If you’re looking for what to see in Tauragė with kids, definitely add this site to your plans – it impressed both our children and us.

Tauragė Region museum Santaka amazed our family
Traveling around Lithuania, we’re constantly impressed by how modern, interesting, and interactive city museums have become. They’ve changed a lot – they’re nothing like the old museums we remember from decades ago. Now, museums are extremely family-friendly – kids can touch, try, and experience so much. For children, it’s the most fun type of learning. That’s exactly what you’ll find at Tauragė Region museum Santaka, located in the historic Tauragė Castle. Today, it’s one of the most modern regional museums in Lithuania. Here, you experience history not through long texts or glass cases, but through hands-on activities that engage everyone. The museum spreads its spaces across several towers and exhibit areas, so every visit becomes a little journey through Tauragė’s region – from the oldest archaeological finds to local nature and history.
Even before you step inside, Tauragė Castle catches your eye. It’s one of the city’s most iconic symbols and probably the most photographed spot in Tauragė. Built in the 19th century, the building has served as a customs office, an administrative center, and now houses the museum. Castles always spark kids’ curiosity, so just the chance to explore the towers and historic spaces is already an adventure.
Archaeology tower and a unique sandbox
The Archaeology Tower made the biggest impression on our kids. Here, history is presented in a way that makes you want to experience it, not just read about it. Interesting artifacts, stories about ancient Baltic life, and modern interactive features make it easy for even the youngest visitors to get involved.
The highlight of this exhibit is the unique archaeological sandbox. Kids can search for hidden artifacts themselves and feel like real archaeologists. In fact, our kids spent the most time here – each discovery made them even more curious.
Nature exhibit that truly surprised us
We didn’t expect the nature section to become one of the most interesting parts of the museum. Usually, kids just walk past these kinds of displays, but in Tauragė, it was completely different.
Here, you discover the animals, birds, and natural diversity of the Tauragė region firsthand. The museum presents the exhibit in a modern style, so children easily connect what they see with the nature around them every day.
Our children especially enjoyed spending time in the creative space, where they could draw and play.
Workshops and family activities
Tauragė museum regularly organizes educational workshops, creative labs, and special programs for families. That means every visit can be different. If you’re planning a trip to Tauragė, it’s worth checking the museum’s event calendar in advance – you might find extra activities for kids during your visit.
The museum also presents the history of the Tauragė region from ancient times to today. While history can seem like a grown-up topic, the museum’s displays are designed to interest children, too. Interactive solutions, visuals, and modern exhibit design make learning history much easier than in traditional museums.
The archaeology tower, unique sandbox, unexpectedly fascinating nature section, and modern take on history made this one of the most pleasant surprises of our trip to Tauragė. If you’re planning a weekend in Tauragė with kids, we highly recommend including this museum in your itinerary.
