Just a week ago, the newly opened Klaipėda Castle Tower began attracting large crowds and considerable tourist attention. It’s no surprise that it’s already being called one of Lithuania’s biggest tourism highlights this year. After years of restoration, this historic Klaipėda landmark now welcomes visitors to explore the city’s past and enjoy panoramic views from the top floors, as well as the incredible architecture. Our whole family found this place absolutely fascinating. We can confidently say this is one of the most unique places in Lithuania, and the architecture will leave no one indifferent. Trust us, this is a spot you should definitely add to your seaside travel plans this summer.

Newly opened Klaipėda Castle Tower amazes visitors
The Klaipėda Castle Tower immediately impresses with its historic appearance, but the interior is even more striking. Across several floors, you’ll find exhibitions, modern architecture, a glass elevator, and an interior that creates an authentic atmosphere. You can learn about the castle’s history here and ride the elevator to the top floor, where you’ll see views of the Old Town, the Danė River, the port, and the Curonian Spit.
History of Klaipėda Castle and Tower
Klaipėda Castle – also known as Memelburg Castle – stands as the oldest brick castle in present-day Lithuania. The castle builders completed it in the 13th century, and for centuries it served as a key defensive and administrative center. In the 16th century, the city added the main castle tower, making it one of the tallest and most important structures in Klaipėda.
Wars and turmoil over the years severely damaged both the castle and the tower. Eventually, the city lost them completely. Today, you can visit the rebuilt tower. This restoration brings an important part of Klaipėda’s history back to life and lets everyone better understand the city’s past.
Useful information
You can visit the Klaipėda Castle Tower together with the Klaipėda Castle Museum. The museum is free to visit on the last Sunday of every month. However, it’s well worth the ticket – even if you have to pay – because the museum itself is very interesting and interactive, and the tower is truly a special place. The observation deck with its breathtaking panorama alone is worth the visit.
The museum is absolutely family-friendly and interesting for kids. The visit is accessible for even the youngest children in strollers. There’s an elevator in the tower, so you don’t have to use the stairs to reach the top.
Parking is available right next to the museum.
