Klaipėda Sculpture Park invites you on a unique art journey: the sculptures speak here

Three years ago, Klaipėda Sculpture Park underwent a complete renovation. Recently, the park has attracted more and more visitors – and not without reason. Just a few months ago, we visited with our kids to see an innovative project that brought a new experience to the park. As you walk among more than a hundred works of art, you quickly realize this is nothing like an ordinary park. Here, some sculptures actually “speak.” You simply scan the QR codes next to them to hear the stories behind the sculptures, learn how they were created, and discover fascinating facts about Klaipėda. As a result, this place is a wonderful open-air space with infrastructure that’s perfectly adapted for families. So, if you’re planning a seaside holiday, add this park to your list of must-see places with kids. For even more family ideas, check out our article on observation decks around Klaipėda.

Klaipėda Sculpture Park invites you on a unique art journey

Our family was pleasantly surprised by the changes in Klaipėda Sculpture Park. Right now, 25 sculptures “speak” to visitors. Currently, as many as 25 sculptures “speak” –  they feature special plaques with QR codes, and when you scan them with your phone, you can listen to audio stories in Lithuanian or English.

The park introduced this project in the spring. Therefore, if you visited before, it’s definitely worth coming back. Notably, Klaipėda native Sondra Simanavičienė wrote the texts for the sculptures, and actor Kristijonas Lučinskas recorded the stories. As you listen, the sculptures share their symbolism, reveal their authors, and tell the city’s history. Altogether, these stories turn a walk in the park into a free concert or an open-air art and history lesson.

Klaipėda Sculpture Park is a great spot for adults and children alike. There’s a fantastic playground that our kids loved. If you plan to visit Klaipėda, make sure to check our guide to the best playgrounds in the city.

More than 100 sculptures in one place

Klaipėda Sculpture Park covers 10 hectares and stands on the site of the city’s old cemetery. Today, you can explore over 100 works of modern sculpture. Most of them appeared during international sculptors’ symposiums between 1977 and 1991.

Among the “speaking” sculptures, you’ll find pieces like “Paukštulis,” “Wave Shadows,” “Midnight,” “Awakening,” “Aitvaras,” “Barnabas Goes to Sea,” “Black Woman,” “Mirror,” “Mažvydas,” and many others.

Talking sculptures in Klaipėda an ongoing tradition

Talking sculptures aren’t new in Klaipėda. In the past, visitors could listen to stories about well-known sculptures like “Taravos Anikė,” “The Black Ghost,” “The Mermaid,” “Neringa,” and “The Fisherman.”

Now, for the first time, the entire park brings this idea to life. Kids love searching for “talking” sculptures –  it’s like a game. Meanwhile, adults enjoy discovering art in a new way.
