Gran Canaria is well known for its impressive landscapes. However, one of the most intriguing and still lesser-known natural spots on the island is Barranco de las Vacas. This place increasingly attracts travelers who look for unique scenery and highly photogenic locations.
Barranco de las Vacas in Gran Canaria is a stunning canyon shaped over thousands of years by erosion and natural processes. It resembles famous canyons in the United States and stands out for its soft, wavy sandstone formations. As a result, it creates a truly distinctive landscape. Moreover, this spot is perfect for photography. The smooth rock shapes and dramatic play of light and shadows provide ideal conditions for photos.
How to get to Barranco de las Vacas in Gran Canaria
Barranco de las Vacas is located near the town of Agüimes, in the southeastern part of Gran Canaria. Although the road to the canyon is not clearly marked, it is best to leave your car at the parking area near the GC-550 road and continue on foot. Some visitors leave their cars closer to the canyon along the roadside. However, you cannot park there, and authorities may fine you. The walk is short and takes about 10–15 minutes from the road. There are two options: you can descend into the ravine from the parking area and walk to the right, or you can continue along the road to a turn-off and then descend into the ravine. The second option is faster and shorter, but it is also steeper and less safe.
When is the best time to visit?
The best time to visit Barranco de las Vacas is early in the morning or late in the afternoon. At these times, the light creates striking colors on the rocks. In addition, we recommend avoiding rainy periods, as water can collect in the canyon.
Visiting with children – is it recommended?
Barranco de las Vacas can be an interesting and memorable experience for families with children. However, we have several recommendations:
- In our opinion, this location is most suitable for children from around 6 years old who can walk comfortably on uneven terrain.
- You should remain cautious, as some sections are narrow or have rocky surfaces.
- Comfortable footwear is essential to prevent slipping for both children and adults.
- Do not forget to bring water, especially on hot days.
- Avoid visiting after rainfall, as the ground can become slippery and dangerous.
- Most importantly, supervise children closely. Make sure they do not climb the rocks or run on uneven paths.
If children enjoy nature and are active, this place can turn into a great adventure.
