History of its creation
More than ten years ago, artist Vytenis Jakas and the local community of central Kaunas decided to turn their everyday courtyard on E. Ožeškienės Street into a living narrative. The place had a strong historical atmosphere, because a large Jewish community lived in this courtyard during the interwar period. Their stories and memories remained almost forgotten for a long time.
The idea was simple but bold. They wanted to transform the courtyard into an open-air gallery where each mural, portrait, or installation would speak about people, their lives, and their relationship with the place.
Transformation of the courtyard
The first artworks appeared together with stories from local residents. People shared family archives, photographs, and memories. Therefore, art became a connection between the past and the present, and also between neighbors and artists. Later, the gallery grew. More murals, installations, and unexpected artistic details appeared, and they changed not only the look of the courtyard but also its atmosphere.
The Courtyard Gallery became a living organism, because new artworks appear every year. Moreover, events, educational activities, and tours take place regularly. Art moved out of museum walls and entered daily life.
