When you imagine palm groves, you probably think of the Middle East, North Africa, or exotic tropical islands. However, not many realize that the largest palm grove in Europe – and one of the largest in the world – hides just a short distance from the Mediterranean coast in southeastern Spain. In fact, the largest palm grove in Europe is in Elche. Known as the Palmeral of Elche or Elche Palm Grove, it’s not only the biggest in Europe but also one of the most impressive UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscapes on the planet. Today, the palm grove in Elche covers more than 200,000 date palms. These trees fill a vast area, growing along city streets, gardens, and historic irrigation canals. Therefore, if you plan to visit this part of Spain or Alicante, be sure to add Elche to your must-see list.

The largest palm grove in Europe in Elche
The largest palm grove in Europe, in Elche, will surprise many travelers even before you enter the city. Instead of the usual southern European landscape, you suddenly come upon a vast green oasis with hundreds of thousands of palms. As a result, this unique landscape in southeastern Spain feels more like North Africa or the Middle East than Europe. It’s no wonder Elche is often called one of Spain’s most unexpected cities.
The history of Elche’s palm grove stretches back more than a thousand years. The current system took shape in the 10th century under the Moors, who ruled much of Spain at the time. They created a complex network of irrigation canals that made it possible to grow various plants and maintain a thriving oasis in this dry region.
To this day, part of the ancient system remains in use. Because of its exceptionally well-preserved Islamic farming tradition, UNESCO added the palm grove to the World Heritage list in 2000.
Viewed from above, the Palmeral looks like a huge geometric tapestry of gardens. The palms are arranged in separate orchards called “huertos,” between which run narrow canals and pathways. Over the centuries, this landscape has become an integral part of the city.
A place that makes you forget you’re in Europe
Most travelers are especially struck by the atmosphere. While walking among the tall palms, listening to the sound of running water, and feeling the dry Mediterranean heat, it’s easy to forget you’re still in Europe. In fact, some tourists compare Elche to Morocco or Tunisia.
The palm grove looks especially impressive at sunset, as the light filters through the dense palm canopy and paints everything in golden hues.
One of the most famous corners of the palm grove is the Huerto del Cura Botanical Garden. Here, you’ll find the legendary “Imperial Palm” – a unique tree with eight trunks, considered one of the city’s icons.
Unlike most historic parks, the Elche Palm Grove isn’t just a tourist attraction. It’s a living part of the city – palms surround residential areas, streets, parks, and squares. Inside the grove, life is vibrant, with playgrounds and food stalls. Our kids loved it here, especially since it wasn’t as hot as other parts of the city. The playgrounds quickly became their favorite spots.
Why do so few people know about this place?
Although UNESCO protects Elche’s palm grove, it’s still less well-known than Spain’s famous cities – Barcelona, Malaga, Seville, or Valencia. Many tourists head to the Costa Blanca region for the beaches, but have no idea that such a unique European landscape is just a few dozen kilometers away.
That’s why Elche is often called a hidden gem of Spain – a place that surprises even experienced travelers.
And while Europe has no shortage of impressive natural wonders, few places can so completely change your perception of where you are in the world.
Practical information
Elche is just 30 kilometers from Alicante, so you can easily reach it by car in half an hour. Before visiting, we thought the Elche Palm Grove was a paid park, like a botanical garden, but it isn’t. The palm grove is a vast area that covers much of Elche, and admission is free. It’s similar to Bernardine Garden in Vilnius, Ąžuolynas in Kaunas, or Central Park in New York.
However, inside the palm grove, you’ll find one of Elche’s best-known attractions – the Huerto del Cura Botanical Garden, which does require an entrance fee. Still, you don’t need to buy a ticket to appreciate the size and atmosphere of the grove. Trust us, just walking among thousands of palms and taking in the stunning landscape is enough to understand how unique and grand this place truly is.
