Science Island in Kaunas: when science becomes an adventure and children ask to come back again

Can you imagine a place where your child walks out and asks, “When can we go again?” Not to an amusement park, not to a playroom, but to a science center? Science Island in Kaunas is one of those places that truly combines learning with real fun. And this is definitely not just an empty slogan. After three hours there with our 5 and 8 year old children, we can confidently say that a love for science really can begin. Most importantly, it starts through curiosity, experiments, and that special moment when a child discovers how the world around them works.

First impressions

As soon as we walked in, everything caught our attention. We wanted to try every exhibit one by one. And here comes the first pleasant surprise. You not only can touch, try, and experiment here, but you actually should. Science Island in Kaunas: when science becomes an adventure and children ask to come back again.

Right at the entrance, you can take small game brochures. Honestly, this is one of the best ideas we have seen in museums or centers. Throughout the visit, you complete tasks, look for answers among the exhibits, and at the end you receive a prize. As a result, the whole experience becomes much more engaging. Not only children, but parents get involved as well, because you search for answers together and help your child learn useful things through play. So this idea truly turns the visit into a real adventure rather than just looking at exhibits.

Exhibition “Human. Nature. Machine”: when science turns into play

The main center features 140 exhibits that cover 7 themes: the human body and health, food, nature and environment, waste and pollution, energy, transport, and communication. Most importantly, you can touch and test everything.

These exhibitions are not the kind where you just stand, read, and look. Instead, you try things yourself. You touch, you feel, you hear, and even smell. Because of this, you really need more time. You want to try everything, understand it, and explain it to your children.

Some exhibits feel especially engaging for kids. For example, there are drawings with a water theme: fish, crabs, and other sea animals. The child colors the drawing in any way they like. Then they place it under a special scanner and magic happens. The drawing appears on the screen. As a result, the child sees their creation come to life.

There is also an exhibit that measures your speed. Honestly, the children found it hard to walk away from this one. They repeated the test maybe ten times before they finally managed to “beat themselves.”

Is it suitable for different ages?

We visited with a 5 and an 8 year old, so we could clearly compare their reactions. An eight year old explores the exhibits differently. They spend more time, ask questions, and try to understand things more deeply. A five year old may focus more on the game aspect than on the scientific benefit. However, we can confidently say it was interesting for him too, especially when you explain what is happening. In our opinion, 5 years old is a perfect age to visit. Moreover, you can confidently come even with four year olds.

Smart layout of the space

One thing pleasantly surprised us. The layout of the space is very smart. After you finish the main exhibition with the more serious exhibits, you enter an area with a café called DRIP DROP. There you can buy coffee, tea, ice cream, and pastries. Everything seems designed with families in mind. There is even a small playpen for toddlers.

If you continue past the café, you will find separate exhibitions. These focus more on playful experiences. At the same time, they remain useful and educational. So if you visit with an older child and a toddler, you can sit in the café, place the little one in the playpen, and let the older child continue exploring. Meanwhile, you can calmly enjoy your coffee or tea with a delicious pastry.

Overall, the entire layout feels brilliant for families with children of different ages. By the way, parents will enjoy this space as well. We promise.

We stayed for about 3 hours. However, we spent some time resting and eating ice cream. For a proper visit, you should plan a full 3 hours. In fact, even 4 hours would be better if you want to explore everything calmly.

Helpful staff

Another great thing is the staff. There are enough employees, and they kindly approach the exhibits and explain what to do if you feel unsure. In reality, you do not have to look around for help. They see you and offer support.

Where to eat after exploring

On the second floor of the center, near the planetarium, you will find the restaurant PYO. Here you get more than just café drinks. There is a full menu with a children’s menu, chicken and pork dishes, croissants, and salads. So you can have a proper meal either before or after your visit.

Practical information

Tips for families

Plan your time. We honestly did not manage to explore and read everything properly. We also did not have enough time to explain everything to the children. Therefore, we already plan to visit at least a few more times. Set aside at least 3 to 4 hours so you can try everything calmly.

Do not skip the game brochure. Take it right at the entrance. It will make your visit even more engaging and interesting.

Take a break. If the children get tired, stop at the DRIP DROP café. Rest, eat some ice cream, and then continue exploring.

Combine it with the planetarium. We definitely plan to return not only to explore everything calmly, but also because the center has the most modern planetarium in the Baltic countries.

Science Island is more than an exhibition

Science Island stands in one of our favorite places, on the island. It is especially nice to walk there in summer. Next to it, you will find a great playground that we included in our list of the best playgrounds in Kaunas. So you can continue your visit with a walk in nature or outdoor play. This works perfectly if the children want to run off some energy after the exhibition.

Is it worth it?

Definitely yes. Science Island in Kaunas truly fulfills its goal. It awakens curiosity and inspires experimentation. As they say themselves, “To connect real science with entertainment and to break the myth that fun cannot be valuable.” And truly, a love for science appears. The children already ask when we can go again.

We will definitely visit again. We plan to come both alone as a couple and again with the children. And next time, we will include the planetarium in our visit.

Science Island also works well for team building and work events. When we visited, something similar was taking place. It really looked like everyone enjoyed their time.

If you look for a place where your child will not only spend time but also learn something new, where learning becomes play and science becomes an adventure, Science Island in Kaunas is exactly what you need.
