In Tenerife, in the northern part of the island, every year on the first weekend of May, Los Realejos becomes a true capital of lights, sounds, and traditions. Here you can experience one of the most impressive Canary Islands festivals – the “Cruces y Fuegos de Mayo” (Crosses and Fireworks) celebration.
During this celebration, the town decorates many crosses. However, there are two places where the festival feels especially strong. La Cruz Santa and the streets of Sol and Medio. In these areas, you can see hundreds of crosses. They appear along pathways, on building facades, in windows, inside homes, in courtyards, and in small chapels. People decorate them with exceptional flowers, candles, and lights. As a result, they create impressive altars. This is a tradition passed down from generation to generation. Finally, the entire festival reaches its peak with an impressive fireworks battle in Tenerife: a unique show in Europe.
Impressive fireworks battle in Tenerife: a unique show in Europe
Fireworks in honour of the Holy Cross have a story of their own. Everything began when the residents of Sol street – farmers and agricultural workers – and the residents of Medio street – the bourgeoisie and aristocracy – started competing. They wanted to see which neighbourhood would decorate their street cross better. This friendly competition gained special meaning in the 18th century. As a result, residents began competing with fireworks. Over time, the constant “rain” of rockets and firecrackers turned into what we now call a fireworks festival.
This unique show in Europe lasts almost three hours. An endless flow of gunpowder blasts becomes a synchronised display of light, music, and colour, lighting up the sky over Los Realejos.
In 2009, the “May Crosses and Fireworks” celebration was declared an important event for Canary Islands tourism – it was the first celebration of this kind to receive this status.
Since March 26, 2015, this festival also holds the title of a National Tourist Interest Festival, granted by the Spanish Ministry of Tourism.
This fireworks battle is considered one of the longest and most impressive pyrotechnic programmes in Europe.
During the celebration, the town hosts:
- Traditional processions
- Local music and dance performances
- Street fairs with food, handicrafts, and local products
Therefore, it is a great opportunity to get to know the true spirit of Tenerife, spend time among locals, and experience the community celebration from the inside.
“Cruces y Fuegos” in Los Realejos is not just a celebration, it is a unique show where faith, art, and community come together. So, if you are in Tenerife in May – do not miss the chance to see it. It is not only fireworks – it is an emotion you will take with you for a lifetime. We visited it and we truly highly recommend it!
