Free interesting places in Lithuania for kids

We have some great ideas for your next weekend trip or family holiday. In this article, we share a list of free and fun places for kids in Lithuania – spots that, we’re sure, will also appeal to adults.

We want to highlight the places that our own family loves to visit. In addition, we want to show you that free interesting places for kids in Lithuania really do exist. After all, not every fun activity or destination has to cost money.

Which places do we recommend for free family visits?

Ažumiškė II

Free and fun places for kids in Lithuania can be truly enjoyable. In fact, what could be more fun than feeding animals? This spot isn’t widely known online – it’s a homestead in Švenčionys district. Here, you’ll find many fallow deer grazing in large enclosures, and you can safely feed and interact with them. Essentially, it’s like a free petting zoo. To find it, simply enter “Ažumiškė II” into your GPS and don’t forget to bring apples, carrots, or other treats for the animals. Without a doubt, we guarantee your kids will love it!

Plane spotting platform

Some free and fun places for kids in Lithuania are truly unique. This is the only place in Lithuania where you can watch planes so close up. It’s a great spot for both younger and older kids, and even adults will enjoy it. Did you know there’s also a great playground next to the platform? We guarantee the whole family will have a fantastic time.

When should you go? It’s most fun when there are lots of take-offs and landings. We recommend checking the Vilnius Airport website for real-time flight information. You can also use Flightradar for information on passenger, cargo, and technical flights.

Railway park

A unique and free space for kids and adults awaits at Vilnius Railway Station. Not only can you see historic rolling stock—such as diesel locomotives, railcars, a tank transporter, a steam locomotive, a restaurant carriage, maintenance equipment, and a sleeping car – but you can also explore them up close.

Best of all, you can climb aboard many of the vehicles and look inside. Kids especially love that everything can be touched, tried, and explored. For example, you can even try a manual railcar or swing on wheelset-made swings. Additionally, there’s a magical, wish-granting historic bell for everyone to enjoy.

As a result, you’ll take lots of great photos! The Railway Park is FREE for everyone. It’s open every weekday from 8:00 to 20:00. Conveniently, the park is located at Vilnius Railway Station and is accessible via the pedestrian bridge on Pelesos or Geležinkelio streets.

The longest slide in Lithuania

While walking the trail along Lake Pastovėlis in Molėtai, you’ll find the longest outdoor slide in Lithuania. This is a wonderful activity for kids and adults alike. Next to it, there’s a playground with attractions like a trampoline, zipline, table tennis, and more. Adults can relax on sun loungers by the lake. Our tip: bring a blanket or mat for extra comfort when sliding.

Alytus Youth park playground

The Alytus Youth park playground is probably one of the most modern in Lithuania.

The park also features chess, sports, skateboarding, training, and parkour areas, marked cycling paths, a skatepark, and two “pumptrack” bike tracks. One is for kids and beginners, and the other – the largest in Lithuania – is perfect for one-on-one races.

Youth Park is famous not only for its flowerbeds but also for the squirrels who greet visitors and look forward to nuts. The park has updated, colorful playground games painted on the asphalt.

Parking is available on Žuvinto or Vilties streets.

Palanga Children’s Park

In a peaceful spot surrounded by pine trees, near a cycling path and just by the sea, you’ll find an oasis of joy for little ones. Notably, this popular Children’s Park is located at the intersection of Naglio Avenue and Šermukšnių Street. Here, kids can enjoy free play on sea-themed attractions up to 7 meters high, climbing frames, swings, and carousels for all ages. In addition, the entire area is fenced, equipped with security cameras, and well-lit for safety. All equipment is made from glued wood and plastic, while the playgrounds are filled with seaside sand.

Lithuanian police museum in Vilnius

This is one of the most interesting free museums in Lithuania. Here, you can learn about the history of the Lithuanian police and use modern technology to see how police work has changed over the years.

You’ll find a variety of exhibits from different eras: firearms, special protection, radio and speed control devices, uniforms, awards, and more. One highlight is a real BMW 1150 RT police motorcycle, which escorted US President George W. Bush during his 2002 visit to Lithuania – plus many other fascinating historical artifacts.

Chicken-legged hut

Near Merkinė, by the road toward Alytus, you’ll spot a house on chicken legs up on a hill. Interestingly, it’s not a museum or a playground, as many might think. Instead, it’s a rest and watch station for Merkinė firefighters who oversee the Dzūkija forests. There’s also a gazebo and an outdoor toilet – making it an ideal place for a quick stop. In addition, nearby you’ll find Merkinė Mound and the Merkinė Observation Tower.

The only floating swings in Lithuania on Lake Dusia

On Lake Dusia, near the Meteliai Regional Park Visitor Center, you’ll find the only floating swings in Lithuania. We guarantee you’ve never swung on anything like this before!

Kadagiai Valley

This spring, the popular Arlaviškės Nature Trail in Kaunas Reservoir Regional Park was renovated and adapted for visitors. Walking the trail, you’ll enjoy not just beautiful panoramas of the Kaunas Reservoir but also a unique juniper grove – hence the nickname Kadagiai Valley Trail.

Five years ago, people named this trail the most beautiful in Lithuania. In particular, the wooden section of the path, which is accessible for people with disabilities, winds along the top of the Kaunas Reservoir slope. Throughout the year, you can enjoy views of the juniper grove, Dabinta Island, and the enchanting Kaunas Reservoir.
