Sun protection guide: what to choose for a family holiday

Can you imagine a holiday bag without sunscreen? Most families heading to the beach or on vacation always pack some form of sun protection. That’s why our own holiday kit always includes sun protection products, whether we’re on a weekend getaway or a longer trip. However, did you know that sun protection shouldn’t be just a beach or pool ritual? In fact, it should be part of your family’s daily skincare routine – even when you’re not sunbathing.

Sun protection guide: what to choose for a family holiday and why it matters. In this guide, we’ll answer these important questions:

  • Why is sun protection essential, not just on hot days?
  • How do you choose the right products for the whole family?
  • Which sun protection is best for different activities – from hiking to swimming?
  • What do experts and dermatologists recommend?

Sun protection guide: what to choose for a family holiday

Why you should use SPF every day

Many people still mistakenly think sunscreen is only needed when sunbathing or in direct sunlight. However, ultraviolet rays that cause aging and cell damage actually penetrate clouds and even glass. Children’s skin is extra sensitive to UVA rays – early damage can lead to problems later in life. Women with pigmentation spots or sensitive skin should use SPF daily – even in winter. Remember, sun protection is necessary even when driving or sitting in the shade.

Which sun protection to choose for the whole family

SPF products are a long-term investment in healthy skin. They’re not a luxury, but a necessity. High-spectrum SPF (30–50+) is especially important for kids and for people with fair skin. It’s also crucial in countries with strong sun. For example, in the popular Canary Islands, we always use only high-SPF products. The myth that a lower SPF helps you tan is simply not true.

Physical filters are a must for sensitive or baby skin. Water resistance matters for kids, since they spend so much time in the water. For little ones, ingredients are key – choose formulas without fragrance, alcohol, or allergens.

What we really like is that in the Dermedic sunscreen line, you can find both spray and cream (emulsion) formulas for children and adults.

What to use for different activities?

  • Swimming in the pool, sea, or ocean? Choose water-resistant sunscreen. We recommend Dermedic Sunbrella sun protection milk in spray SPF 50+ for children and infants, and Dermedic Sunbrella sun protection spray for adults. Even with water-resistant sunscreen, reapply every 2–3 hours, or right after swimming.
  • Hiking or active time outdoors? Choose a light, fast-absorbing, non-greasy cream. Preferably, a gel-cream or a light emulsion works best. Our family prefers Dermedic fluids for active adventures – the water-based texture absorbs quickly and feels light. What’s more, the bottles are small and handy for your backpack.
  • Traveling by car? UVA rays also penetrate car windows. You need sun protection for your face, hands, and neck – even if you’re not in direct sun.

Sun protection guide: recommendations for the whole family

Everyone in your family should use SPF 30–50+ every day, regardless of weather or plans.

Very important: don’t forget to apply sunscreen to ears, the back of the neck, and legs—these areas are often missed and burn easily.

Add SPF to your morning facial routine – as a cream or makeup base. We recommend Dermedic Sunbrella hydrating sunscreen. This cream is perfect as a daily moisturizer or makeup base.

Even though shade reduces harmful rays, it doesn’t block them completely. That’s why you should use sunscreen even in the shade or on cloudy days.

For children under 3, use physical filters. Choose products that are non-allergenic, fragrance-free, and gentle for sensitive skin. Always carry a child-friendly SPF spray and a cream suitable for babies’ faces, a light hat, UV-blocking clothing, and after-sun lotion.

Sunshine is wonderful for our mood and vitamin D. However, it’s also a challenge for our skin. Protecting yourself today means taking care of your health and beauty for the future.
