When almonds bloom: spring festival in the mountains of Tenerife

The almond blossom season in Tenerife lasts for several weeks rather than just one day. During this time, the island shows its blooming side. In 2026, the almond blossom program in Santiago del Teide will take place from January 24 to February 22. It will combine nature hikes, local culture, music, and gastronomy.

When almonds bloom: the spring festival takes place in the mountains of Tenerife. It is one of the most beautiful winter celebrations in Tenerife. It happens in mountainous areas far from the busy resorts, where almond trees cover themselves in soft pink and white blossoms.

The almond blossom festival in the municipality of Santiago del Teide lasts almost a full month. Organizers arrange nature hikes, local markets, live music performances, gastronomic activities, and cultural events.

End of January: the start of hikes and local culture

  • On Saturday, January 24, a general almond blossom hike will open the festival. The route goes from Santiago del Teide to Arguayo. An artisan market will run in the square all day. In the afternoon, visitors will enjoy a live music concert.
  • On Sunday, January 25, visitors can join free guided tours that help them better understand the region’s nature and traditions. A market will also take place, and another musical performance will happen in the evening.
  • On Saturday, January 31, the program will include a family-friendly almond blossom hike. The route goes from Santiago del Teide to Las Manchas. These hikes are shorter and easier, so they suit children as well. A market and a concert will also take place.

February: more themed routes and events

  • On February 1 and 2, Sunday and Monday, the market will operate, and live music concerts will take place each day.
  • On Saturday, February 7, one of the most eventful days will arrive. Almond blossom hikes will take place, and visitors can join workshops for traditional local sweets. A concert will follow in the evening.
  • On Sunday, February 8, the market will open, and a musical performance will take place.
  • On Saturday, February 14, the program will focus on Valentine’s Day. The Lovers route will offer romantic almond blossom trails for couples. Almond gastronomy workshops, a market, and a concert will also take place.
  • On Sunday, February 15, organizers will hold guided educational walks and a musical program.
  • On Tuesday, February 17, a rural carnival will take place. Traditional characters, masks, and dances will appear. This unique event will connect the almond blossom festival with local carnival traditions.
  • On Friday, February 20, the Pentámera folklore festival will bring together folklore groups from the island and other islands.
  • On Saturday, February 21, organizers will offer hikes adapted for older people and people with disabilities. A night almond blossom hike from Santiago del Teide to Las Manchas will also take place. Visitors will see an almond cocktail presentation and enjoy a concert.
  • On Sunday, February 22, the last day of the festival will include guided walks, a market, and a closing concert.

Almond blossom gastronomic route

The almond blossom season in Tenerife is not only about walks among pink trees in the mountains. It is also a great opportunity to taste local dishes and desserts. During this period, Santiago del Teide and nearby areas host a special almond blossom gastronomic route. It brings together cafés, restaurants, bakeries, and local shops. This year, 22 food and retail establishments will take part in the almond blossom gastronomic route.

Sweets receive a lot of attention here. Many cafés offer traditional barraquito coffee with almond cake, almond sponge cakes, tarts, and small desserts. These treats work perfectly as a sweet stop after a hike. In local shops and points of sale, visitors can find Canarian almond sweets. They can take them home as gifts or taste them on the spot.

Those who look for more filling flavors will not feel disappointed either. Some restaurants prepare special dishes for this season. For example, they serve fish in almond sauce with papas arrugadas, tuna with toasted almonds, or even pork dishes in traditional almond sauce.

One of the most beautiful ways to experience the almond blossom season in Tenerife is to join organized nature hikes. These hikes take place in a protected area, the El Chinyero Special Nature Reserve. This location belongs to the Canary Islands network of protected natural areas and stands out not only for its landscape.

The hikes form part of the cultural program of the Santiago del Teide municipality. Guides introduce participants not only to the almond blossoms, but also to the local nature, landscape, and rules that help protect this unique environment. This is not just a simple walk. Instead, it is a slow and educational experience that helps visitors understand why this region is so special.

All routes start at the central square of Santiago del Teide. Participation is possible only with prior registration because each hike has a limited number of places. The price is 5 euros per person.

Organizers recommend careful preparation. You should wear sports clothing and comfortable footwear, ideally hiking shoes. You should also bring warmer clothes, a rain jacket, water, and snacks. Because of the uneven terrain, hiking poles can also help. Light rain usually does not stop the hikes. However, organizers reserve the right to change the route or cancel the hike if weather conditions threaten the safety of participants.

Different hikes for different travelers

The program is designed so everyone can find a suitable route. It includes general hikes for experienced walkers and family-friendly routes that are shorter and easier. These are recommended for children from 6 years old. The program also includes hikes with pets, a romantic Lovers route for couples, barrier-free routes for older people and people with disabilities, and even a night hike that requires a flashlight.

It is important to note that all hikes take place in Spanish. The recommended minimum age of participants depends on the chosen route.

Where to see almonds without joining hikes

You can also see almond trees on your own. Drive along La Placeta Street behind the church until you find the start of the path to Chinyero. A small children’s playground stands there and works as a landmark. If you decide not to go on a hike, you will still find more than one almond tree here. While the children play in the playground, you can take beautiful selfies and photos.

You can also walk part of this path together with children. Keep to the left side, pass Hotel La Casona del Patio, and return to the main street near the church. The path is quite rocky, so you must wear comfortable closed shoes and bring a light wind jacket. Hiking with children is always more fun if you also prepare snacks for a small picnic.
