Where is Montaña Roja?

The volcano is located in the town of El Médano, in the southern part of Tenerife.

In general, once you arrive, you can easily park your car at the Playa La Tejita beach parking area or alternatively in the La Tejita neighborhood.

Hike duration and difficulty

The route length is about 3–4 km round trip, depending on the starting point. The hike takes around 45–60 minutes.

Difficulty:

  • This is a climb uphill with the descent along the same path.
  • It is suitable for children from around 5 years old and for beginner hikers.
  • The final section is steeper, but the distance is short.

When is the best time to hike?

  • Morning: fewer people and cooler temperatures.
  • Evening: ideal for sunset. The mountain faces west, so the view of the sun setting over the ocean is truly impressive.
  • Avoid midday in summer, as there is almost no shade and it gets very hot.

Views and what you will see at the top

From the top, you get panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean. On one side, you see Playa La Tejita beach. On the other side, you see the town of El Médano.

In addition, with good weather, you can also see Teide and other surrounding mountains.

At the same time, you can watch planes landing at and taking off from Tenerife South Airport.

Finally, at sunset, the entire hill turns red and orange.

Practical tips

When planning the hike, bring water, a hat, and sunscreen.

In addition, wear comfortable sports shoes. Also, bring a light wind jacket.

Also, it is recommended to avoid hiking on very windy days, as strong winds are common in the El Médano area.
